Walking Through the Psalms
“Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.” – Psalm 36:5 (NLT)

“In the Blackness of Space”
I was reading a fascinating story a week or two ago about astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. If you remember these two, they went into space to go to the International Space Station. It was supposed to be an eight-day mission. But then there were technical issues. They couldn’t return. They ended up being stuck on the space station for nine months. This past March 18th, they returned home. Sometimes life has a way of throwing us curves we never expected. Many of us would have panicked if we’d been stuck like that. Some of us would have been overwhelmed by anxiety or fear. Some of us would have probably even felt as if God had abandoned us or forgotten us.
Astronaut Butch Wilmore had a different take on his experience based on his passionate faith in God. When asked about what his life lesson or takeaway was from being stranded in space for nine months, Butch’s response was this: “My feeling on all of this goes back to my faith. It’s bound in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is working out his plan and his purposes for his glory throughout all of humanity. How that plays into our lives is significant and important, and however that plays out, I am content because I understand that. I understand that He’s at work in all things.”
Wow. Does YOUR confidence in God’s love and faithfulness rest in Him like that? You see, being stranded in space might leave many people feeling lost and alone. But Butch knew that he was neither lost nor alone. God was with him. And God would work in this and through this, no matter what.
Take another look at our verse for today. “Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.” Do you believe that? Do you REST in that? Do you believe God’s arms of love are around you, no matter where you are right now? Do you believe that God’s faithfulness has you, no matter what you’re going through? Take heart in this promise, my friend. You’re not alone. You’re not abandoned. You’re not forsaken. God will always be right there with you, and His love and faithfulness will be around you. Even in the blackness of space. That’s God’s Word for you today.
