“Walking Through the Psalms”
“The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.” – Psalm 33:6 (NLT)
“When There’s Nothing Left”
“The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.” – Psalm 33:6 (NLT)
“When There’s Nothing Left”
There is an old joke I love about a scientist who was bragging to God that with cloning, gene editing, and DNA mapping, science could now do anything God could do. God said, “Oh yeah? How about a contest to see who can make a man the fastest, just like I did in the Garden of Eden?” The scientist agreed. God reached down, scooped up some dirt, and began to fashion a human being. As the scientist quickly reached down for some dirt as well, God said, “Oh no. Go make your own dirt!”
We’ve come a long way as a species. Science truly can do amazing things. But they have to have SOMETHING to start with. They can make something better. They can take a little something and make it a lot of something. But what they can’t do is make something from NOTHING. But God can. That’s what makes Him GOD.
David reminds us that, “The Lord merely spoke, and heavens were created.” He didn’t take small planets and make bigger planets. He didn’t take a few galaxies and make more galaxies. He took the endless expanse of space in all of its nothingness and made a universe. Yes, He did create man from the dust of the earth. But HE made the dust! That should give you great hope today.
How many times do we come to places in our lives where we say, “There is nothing left”? No love left in the marriage. No money left in the bank. No possible way this cancer can be stopped. No future for that individual. But “nothing” is where God does His best work. He takes the “nothing left” between a man and a woman and speaks “something” into them. And love begins to bloom again. He takes the “nothing” that’s left in the bank and somehow brings resources, jobs, and help that weren’t there. He takes the “nothing we can do” of doctors and makes a wide-eyed miracle out of it. He takes that “no hope” individual and speaks into existence a changed life.
So if you’re at one of those “nothing” places in your life, don’t lose hope. Cry out to the Lord. Lay your “nothing left” before Him and put faith in what He can do. If He can speak the heavens into existence, He can probably make something out of your “nothing,” too. Don’t worry. He’ll even bring His own dust! That’s God’s Word for you today.
