A few years ago, we visited the Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio. They are like a Wonderland that exists just beneath the surface of the earth. As we were guided through the magnificent, giant rooms of the cavern, one of the breathtaking parts I was amazed by was the massive stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites are the spears growing downward from the limestone ceilings of caverns. Stalagmites are the spears below that grow upward. They’re formed as water, oozing through the limestone drips from the ceilings. When the water hits the air, some of the dissolved limestone hardens and forms a small, hard ring. The rings that form above grow downward over time and the ones that hit below grow upward. How long does it take to form one of those beautiful, pointed spears? Scientists have said they grow about 4 inches every 1000 years. If that’s true, then some of those gorgeous, limestone chandeliers are estimated to be over 190,000 years old. God is a MARVELOUS artist. But He’s certainly not in a hurry as He creates His works of art!
You’ve discovered that already, haven’t you? I’ll bet most of us reading this have been frustrated by God at some point, waiting for Him to hurry and catch up with our busy schedule. You may be frustrated with Him now. David reminds us TWICE in this verse that we’re going to need to be patient with God. He speaks from experience. It was YEARS from the time David was told he would be king to the time it finally came to pass. And those years that David was waiting were filled with a lot of pain, problems, and setbacks.
If the truth were to be told, there were probably times David wanted to give up. But that’s why he sandwiched that other part in there. “Be brave and courageous.” I don’t know what God’s up to in your life or what prayers you’re waiting for Him to answer, but you might want to heed David’s words. God, the Artist, is rarely in a hurry. In fact, He’s often layering His Work into our lives one Divine Drip at a time. You may not even see it happening. But don’t worry. It’s happening. And when it’s all done, it will be more magnificent and beautiful than you can imagine. Until then, wait patiently for Him. And be brave and courageous. God’s working on a Masterpiece that is YOU! That’s God’s Word for you today.
