Do you believe that our God is a Healer? Do you believe He can heal us, body, mind, spirit, and emotions? Many people don’t. Oh, they believe God can heal our bodies. They have no trouble praying for themselves or others when it’s for disease, injury, or cancer. Many believe that God can heal our spirits. That He truly can cleanse the evil from our souls and save us. But I’ve discovered that it’s different when it comes to bringing healing to our minds and emotions. Like people who are rude and blurt out hurtful stuff. Or people who are sarcastic or critical. Or people who get angry easily and take it out on others. Often, when you confront people like that, they say, “That’s just the way I am.” To which I respond, “Then CHANGE!” But somehow they’ve convinced themselves that there are some things that God can’t do anything about. I believe they’re wrong.
I have a friend who grew up angry. He had a lot of woundedness in his life, and it became like a fire inside him that was always looking to come out. He worked out and became strong and skilled as a fighter. He would walk into bars and pick fights just to give his anger an outlet. After he came to Christ, he realized that there was an inner healing that needed to be done along with his salvation. Jesus began to close the wounds within him and douse those fires that had burned for a long, long time.
I thought of him when I read our verse for today. Isaiah prophesied hundreds of years before Jesus came that “Even the hotheads will be full of sense and understanding.” That means that Jesus came, not just to save our souls and heal our bodies, but He also came to heal the scars of our damaged emotions and quiet our troubled minds. Listen very carefully to this next statement. How we are isn’t how we have to be. The same Jesus who can break the chains of sin and restore our souls can bring healing to those parts of our lives that still raise their ugly heads from time to time.
I want to encourage you today to stop making excuses for the unhealed parts of your life. Bring your damaged emotions before the Lord. Talk through your troubled past with a counselor. If you will let God all the way IN, those troubling eruptions will stop coming out. Learn the lesson that my friend discovered. God can heal us, inside and out. That’s God’s Word for you today.
