Powerful Words from the Prophets
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies: ‘The time is coming when everything in your palace—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says the LORD. ‘Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of Babylon’s king.’” Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “This message you have given me from the LORD is good.” For the king was thinking, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.” – Isaiah 39:5-8 (NLT)
“It’s Never Just About You”
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies: ‘The time is coming when everything in your palace—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says the LORD. ‘Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. “It’s Never Just About You”
“It’s never just about me.” I want you to say that out loud today. It’s an important truth to keep in mind. We often make decisions thinking only about ourselves. But the choices we make have both a horrible and wonderful way of also impacting those around us.
Hezekiah is a great example of that. By showing the Babylonian envoys around, he has exposed Jerusalem to a great danger. When Isaiah confronts him and tells him the consequences of what is going to happen, Hezekiah’s thoughts are only about himself. “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.” Yeah, but what about in the lifetime of your children, grandchildren, and all of those living in Jerusalem? THEY were going to suffer because of a choice YOU made!
Think about how often this happens. Someone drinks until they’re impaired, and then they get behind the wheel of a car, not considering that they might hurt or kill someone else on the road or a passenger in their car. Or someone smokes, often accepting the fact that their smoking may have health implications for themselves. But they often don’t consider that those around them may have serious health issues from their secondhand smoke. Or sometimes people make horrible financial decisions by buying stuff they can’t afford, not considering that the hole they’re digging isn’t just for themselves, but it becomes a financial grave that the whole family gets buried in. The decisions we make every single day are ripples, waves, and sometimes tsunamis that impact all those we are connected to. And even some we’re NOT connected to!
Hezekiah’s story reminds us that it’s never just about “me.” We need to choose wisely, think carefully, and consider who else will be impacted. Our good choices and wise decisions bless others. Our poor choices and thoughtless actions put others at risk. Be mindful and prayerful today. It’s never just about you. That’s God’s Word for you today.
