Powerful Words from the Prophets
“Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.” – Isaiah 30:21 (NLT)

“Listen to Your Instructor”
My wife struggles with directions. She gets lost fairly easily and has to really think about it to know which way is “right” and which way is “left.” As you can imagine, I have quite a bit of fun with her about that.
One time, we were taking a group of new skiers from our church down a run in Winter Park, Colorado. As I lagged behind to help some stragglers, Wanda skied down to help the ones below us. That group was approaching a place where the ski run split. To the right was a dreaded Black Diamond run, which was for advanced skiers only. To the left was a nice, easy Green run. As the group approached the split, they yelled back at Wanda, “Which way?” She yelled, “Right!” The group turned like a big amoeba towards the Black Diamond run. Wanda immediately caught her mistake and yelled, “I mean LEFT!” The skiers literally toppled over each other trying to quickly turn back. They were a tangled mess of skiers, poles, and skis. We all had a good laugh at Wanda’s expense back at the lodge.
Contrast that with the Blind Skiers we saw on the slope. They glided down the mountain, cutting back and forth with great calm and ease. They each had a vest designating the fact that they couldn’t see. How did they navigate their way down? They had an instructor following closely behind them, calling out, “Right, left, right, left, slower, stop.” Fortunately for the skiers, the instructors KNEW their right from left, and the blind skiers put their full trust in their instructions. They didn’t have to see the slope. They didn’t have to know the terrain. They didn’t even have to be aware of other skiers on the mountain. They just had to carefully listen to their instructor.
Isaiah tells us that we can do the same with God. His Holy Spirit is our Instructor and our Guide. He knows the mountains we’re trying to navigate. He sees what’s in front of us, what’s beside us, and what’s even way down the road. We don’t have to figure it all out. We don’t have to know why “this way” or “that way.” But we DO have to trust Him to lead us in the way we should go. And we DO have to listen. So incline your ear and open your heart as you go out today. He’ll be right behind you, guiding you each step of the way. And don’t worry. He’s not like Wanda. He KNOWS His right from left! That’s God’s Word for you today.
