"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.'” – Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)
“When Christmas Becomes Personal”
“When Christmas Becomes Personal”
As I walked and prayed on Christmas Eve morning, I thought about what that first Christmas Eve must have been like. As God pondered the journey He was about to take, I let myself imagine how He must have felt. The sadness of how dark and desperate the world had become. And yet, the joy of how He knew the hope and light He would bring. The pain of knowing all that He would go through. Yet the comfort of knowing the healing He would bring. And I wondered if He smiled at the amazing event that was about to take place, and how little we would understand it. Think about it:
The Divine became Human
The All-Powerful became a Baby
The Holy One welcomed the Sinners
The King of Kings became a Servant
The One who had been forever came to die that we might live forever.
The One who had never sinned came to be a sacrifice for sin.
Perfect Love came to embrace the very world that had rejected Him.
Did you notice in the passage that it was Angels who were proclaiming this news? And that they were announcing it to SHEPHERDS. The loftiest creatures of heaven were giving hope to the lowliest of the people on Earth. That means that it is Good News to ALL of us! As I walked, I felt like a poor man who had just discovered he’d won the lottery. The riches of heaven have been poured into my lap. “A Savior…the Christ…the Lord” has come. And He has come for ME! I pray that today Christmas will once again take your breath away as it did mine. It’s not just a holiday. It’s a Holy Day. Christmas became personal for me this year as I walked. I hope it will for you as well. “For God so loved YOU that He gave His one and only Son.” Spend a few moments unwrapping THAT gift today. I promise you that it’ll do more than bring a smile. It’ll change your life. From our home to yours, Merry Christmas and God bless you. That’s God’s Word for you today.
