Walking Through the Psalms

“Reining In the ADHD”
I have a friend who is ADHD. If you’ve ever been around anyone like that, they can be maddening to try to talk to. He never looked at me when I was talking. He looked past me, around me, at others walking by, but rarely was he looking just at me. I was never sure if he was actually listening to me or not. It certainly didn’t feel as if he was interested in me or in what I was saying. There were times I just wanted to keep putting myself in front of him and say, “I’m right here!”
I thought of him when I read our verse today. Then, it hit me. I can be that same way with God. It is so easy for me to get distracted, even when I know God has some pretty important things to say to me. I start out looking full into God’s face. But then, something else catches my attention. I get distracted by MY goals and MY desires. I get focused on other people and what they’re doing or what they want from me. Pretty soon, I’m not just peeking around God. I’ve turned my face away from Him. Instead of seeking Him and His will and His desires for me, I’ve turned my face toward my will. Instead of seeking Him intently to lead me, guide me, or shape me, I’m seeking out other things in my life. Sadly, I’ve had times when God has had to use brokenness or failure to turn my face fully toward Him again. Thankfully, as He does, He smiles at me and shines upon me again with the radiance of His mercy and love.
How about YOU? Have you found yourself being a bit ADHD with God? Have you spent time today focusing on Him and seeking Him with all your heart? Or have you found yourself distracted, disconnected, and turning further and further away from Him? Maybe today is a good day to pray the prayer the psalmist did. “Turn us again to yourself, O God. Make your face shine down upon us.” The great news is that those words are like music to God’s ears. As our Father and our Friend, He LONGS to have our full and undivided attention. He has so many things He wants to share with us and so much of Himself He wants to give to us. As the old song says, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His Glory and Grace.” Let’s rein in the ADHD and bask in the glory and grace of God! That’s God’s Word for you today.
