Walking Through the Psalms
“Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.” – Psalm 78:32 (NLT)
“Because of His Wonders, Trust Him!”
“Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.” – Psalm 78:32 (NLT)
“Because of His Wonders, Trust Him!”
This verse is the defining epitaph of the people of God who came out of Egypt. Psalm 78 gives a painful, blow-by-blow account of how God provided what they needed, performed miracle after miracle, protected them from their enemies, and delivered them time and time again. Yet, “Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.” They didn’t trust His power, even after all He had done. They didn’t trust His care, even though He hand-delivered their breakfast and dinner every day for 40 years. They didn’t trust His Sovereignty, even though He was the only one who knew where the Promised Land was that He was taking them to. And they didn’t trust His Love…even though He proved Himself faithful to them over and over again when they were being horribly unfaithful. At one point they basically said they’d rather worship a COW than worship Him. I can’t help but believe that all of that had to break His Heart at times. “Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.” Wow.
But we do that, don’t we? God has been good, INCREDIBLY GOOD to most of us. He’s provided for us. He’s protected us. He’s performed miracles for us. He’s shown His Love a thousand different ways. But let a need come up or a problem arise, and we say, “So what have you done for us LATELY?” How rude of us! Sometimes we even blow Him off and go chasing some other “gods” for a while.
I’m so thankful today that His Love remains. I’m so thankful that He is ever so much more faithful to us than we are to Him. A lesser God would have kicked us to the curb a long time ago. But ours doesn’t. He just keeps coming after us and coming after us until we come to our senses. Listen, my friend. I don’t know what you’re going through or what hard road you may be on. I don’t know what you need or what miracle you’ve been praying for. But this I DO know: You can trust Him! The One who has BEEN faithful will BE faithful. The One who has provided before will provide again. The One who lifted you out of where you WERE will lift you out of where you ARE.
Let’s not be like the people of old. Let’s write a NEW epitaph. Let it be said of us, “BECAUSE of his wonders, they knew they could trust him!” Let’s believe that what He has done, He will do! Let’s lean into Him with all of our faith and hold onto Him no matter what. When God looks down upon us this week, let’s bring a smile to His Holy Face and make Him glad He made us! “Because of his wonders, they knew they could trust him!” Put that on MY tombstone. That’s God’s Word for you today.
