Walking Through the Psalms
“When the Israelites escaped from Egypt—when the family of Jacob left that foreign land—the land of Judah became God’s sanctuary, and Israel became his kingdom. The Red Sea saw them coming and hurried out of their way! The water of the Jordan River turned away.” – Psalm 114:1-2 (NLT)

“God Happens”
I love how the psalmist describes God’s ability to get His people out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. “The Red Sea saw them coming and hurried out of their way! The water of the Jordan River turned away.” I laughed out loud as I read that. Referring to the Red Sea and the Jordan River taking action on their own brought animated cartoon images to mind. It struck me as funny.
But they didn’t take action on their own, of course. Seas don’t have eyes to see people coming, and rivers can’t just “turn away.” God did those things. God parted the Red Sea so His people could escape the pursuing Egyptian army. God held the waters of the Jordan back so His people could cross safely to the other side. Things don’t “just happen.” God happens. This description by the psalmist is a reminder that God doesn’t call you to a task and leave you to accomplish it all by yourself. If God calls you TO it, He will get you THROUGH it!
Camp on that thought for a while. How did you get to where you are? How did you make it through all of those difficult, if not impossible, times in the past? Do you think those things happened all on their own? Did that money magically appear? Did that healing happen all on its own? Did those doors that you needed open see you coming and open themselves? Of course not. God went with you. God went before you. And at the time you needed it, God acted on your behalf.
This should give you great hope for what you’re facing now. The same God who got you to HERE can get you to THERE. The same God who worked on your behalf back then will work on your behalf in the days to come. The same God who did it before can and will do it again. Your Red Seas aren’t going to see you coming and make a way for you. Your Jordan Rivers aren’t going to just stop themselves from flowing, so you can get across. Those things don’t just happen. But God happens. And He will “happen” again for you. If God brought you to it, He will bring you through it. That’s God’s Word for you today.
