Walking Through the Psalms
“Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth! Sing about the glory of his name! Tell the world how glorious he is.” – Psalm 66:1-2 (NLT)

“God’s Glorious Name”
I told a story a few weeks ago in a sermon about a guy in upstate New York who led the police on a wild chase. The 21-year-old was only being pulled over for something simple, but he thought he could dodge the police. After zooming through the streets at speeds over a hundred miles an hour, the police finally used some spike strips to pop his tires and stop him. His “simple” stop turned into a long list of violations, including unlawfully fleeing a police officer, obstructing governmental administration, reckless operation, speeding, speed not reasonable and prudent, failure to comply with a lawful order, failure to keep right, moving from lane unsafely, driving an uninspected and unregistered vehicle, improper license plates, driving without insurance, and various vehicular equipment infractions. What was so interesting about the story was the driver’s real-life name: Indiana Jones. He certainly lived up to it!
I thought of that story when I read our verse for today. Our God has a name He lives up to as well. In fact, our God has MANY names…and He lives up to them ALL! He is called our Father and our Friend. He is called our Protector and our Provider. He is called our Healer and our Helper. He is called our Redeemer and our Rescuer. And the list goes on and on. Each of those names is a reflection of God’s character, God’s power, and God’s work in our lives. He is MIGHTY. He is AMAZING. He is GLORIOUS.
Spend a few moments today reading over the names I’ve listed above. What other names of God come to your mind? Maybe a more important question is, who do you need God to be to YOU today? Do you need a Father to hold you and let you know that it’s going to be okay? You have it. Do you need a Healer who can touch your body or your broken heart and make you whole? You have that, too. Do you need a Provider who can help make ends meet? He’s right there. Whatever you need, God has you covered. You can rest and rejoice in His Glorious Name! That’s God’s Word for you today.
