Walking Through the Psalms
“From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” – Psalm 61:2 (NIV)

“Higher Ground”
Isn’t it crazy how much rain we’ve been getting here in Oklahoma? For the past few weeks, the forecast has been like the movie “Groundhog Day.” Storms. Tornadoes. Rain. The same thing day after day after day. Lakes and rivers are overflowing. Houses along some of the rivers are being washed downstream. Several communities are almost entirely underwater. It’s crazy!
Many people make the mistake of underestimating the flooding and try to drive through it. Some have had to be rescued. Sadly, a few got swept away and lost their lives. It’s hard to fight the rising waters, and we certainly can’t make the rain stop. Sometimes the best we can do is to get to higher ground. That’s where our safety lies.
It's the same with Life. David reminds us in our verse today that even the best of us need to seek safety at times. He was the king. He was the most powerful person in the land. But there were times when even he found himself overcome by all the opposition that life brought his way. So he cried out to God to be a Rock that he could climb onto. A safe place above the rising flood of troubles.
Maybe that’s what YOU need today. Maybe you find yourself in a situation where you can’t do anything about the rising problems. Maybe you’ve been treading water and doing your best to keep yourself steady and strong, but you’re getting tired. The rain of problems just keeps coming, and the floodwaters of despair just keep rising. David said, “My heart grows faint.” Maybe that’s EXACTLY how you feel, too.
Cry out to the Lord today. He is your Rock. He doesn’t always stop the rain from falling or the floodwaters from rising, but He will respond to your cry for help. He will be a safe place for you to hang onto until the waters recede. Don’t try to navigate these storms of life by yourself. Don’t be foolish and believe that you can drive right through it. Swallow your pride, humble your heart, and seek the shelter of God. He will keep you safe. He is The Rock that is your Higher Ground. That’s God’s Word for you today.
