Walking Through the Psalms

“Throw the Liar Out”
When I read this verse today, it made me wonder what kind of “liars” David had dealt with. Some liars, like the ones who like to brag about their exploits and embellish them, are simply annoying. I have no doubt David had his share of those. Like men who wanted to impress the warrior king with their own “greatness.” My guess is that David found these liars to be more amusing than dangerous.
But the king probably also had to deal with more sinister liars. Like the liars who told the king things that weren’t true about someone to try and get them hurt or punished. Or the liars who tried to create division between members of the king’s court, perhaps in a ploy to elevate themselves in the king’s eyes. Or maybe they just liked to see people argue and fight. Either way, these are the kind of liars David wanted thrown out of his presence. The wise king knew that a house divided against itself becomes weak and can crumble.
The Devil knows that, too. And Jesus called him the “father of lies.” He’s been playing havoc in homes and lives all the way back to the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. His lies lured them into sin, created conflict between each other, and separated them from God. And the Devil has been lying ever since.
Have you ever stopped to think how the Devil’s lies might be creating problems and division in your family, church, or place where you work? I had an epiphany about this a few years back. I found myself upset at my wife and started assigning all kinds of blame and ill intent on her without really knowing the truth. In a moment of breakthrough, I heard God say, “Do you REALLY think she meant to do that?” And in that moment of clarity, I realized, “But of course, she didn’t!” It was in that moment that I realized that it was the Enemy planting those thoughts in my head, trying to create anger and frustration in me and division between me and my wife. Sadly, as I sat with the realization, God showed me that I had OFTEN believed the Devil’s lies about her. And it CRUSHED me.
My guess is the Enemy is trying to do this in your home, too. He wants to lie to you about your spouse, your kids, or your parents. He’s trying to make you believe falsehoods about that person at church or that coworker. He wants to create chaos, division, and resentment. He wants to destroy our homes, destroy our churches, and destroy our relationships with others.
Let’s take David’s psalm to heart. Let’s declare that we will give the Enemy no more room to work in our minds, in our hearts, or in our homes. Let’s ask God to help us see through his deception and to bring unity, harmony, and honesty to our lives. And the next time the Devil shows up in your head at home, church, or work, do what David tells us to do. Let’s throw the liar out! That’s God’s Word for you today.
