Walking Through the Psalms

“Dealing With Our Doubts”
Do you ever have doubts? Do you have some right now? It’s okay. We all have them from time to time. We have doubts about why God allows certain things to happen. We have doubts about whether or not God really does hear our prayers. If we’re honest, there are times we doubt if God even exists. Most of those doubts come out of life throwing us curves or times when we’re experiencing some great pain or loss. Mostly, the doubts come out of our emotions, not what we really think or believe. That’s why I love what the psalmist says here. “When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.”
Notice that God doesn’t try to reason with the doubts. Nor does God answer the doubts with facts or logic. You don’t respond to emotions with information. You respond to emotion with something that will help heal the heart. So what did God offer the psalmist? Comfort. God didn’t try to explain away the doubts. He simply came alongside the one struggling and gave soothing peace. This is a great lesson we can all learn from. Because that’s what people who are struggling really need.
Maybe YOU need that today. Maybe the last week or two has put you back on your heels or caused you to be anxious and afraid. Maybe you’ve experienced a loss, had a setback, or walked with a good friend through some trauma in their life. And all of this has caused you to look to heaven and ask, “Why?” But it’s not really an answer you’re looking for. It’s a Presence. It’s a need to feel God near. It’s not as much your mind looking for a reason or an explanation as much as it is your heart needing some reassurance. You want God to do for you what He did for the psalmist.
Reach out to God today. Not for an explanation from Him, but for an experience with Him. As you do, I’m praying in advance that God will meet you right where you are in the middle of whatever it is you are going through. I’m praying that He will wrap His arms around you and calm your troubled spirit. I’m praying that God will lift all the heaviness that you are carrying and breathe into you renewed hope and cheer. I’m praying that God will meet you right there, with all of your doubts. And though you may not get all the answers that you’re asking for, I’m praying that God will give you something better. A peace that passes all understanding. Because it’s His Peace that calms our panic. And that’s when our doubts disappear. That’s God’s Word for you today.
