Walking Through the Psalms
“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.” – Psalm 57:1 (NLT)
“Come Out of That Cave!”
“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.” – Psalm 57:1 (NLT)
“Come Out of That Cave!”
The notes at the beginning of this Psalm say that David wrote it reflecting on the time when he was hiding in a cave. That description struck me. I’ve had my own “caves” I’ve hidden in before. Have you? Maybe some of us find ourselves in a cave right now. There are caves of guilt we hide in. Those are the times when we know our lives are out of sync with God, but instead of seeking His Grace, we hide. We stop going to church. We withdraw from friends and family. Even when we are around people, we’re not really “there.” We’re distant. We’re guarded. We’re so focused on our sin that we’ve totally lost sight of the magnitude of God’s Grace. We’re deep in a cave of guilt and shame. We need to cry out as David did. “Have mercy!” And God will.
Some may find themselves in a cave of fear today. Your spouse just told you they’re moving out. Your doctor just told you that the lump you had checked out is cancerous. Your boss told you that the company is cutting back and your job is getting axed. You just found out your kid is using drugs. Fear is a cave that can swallow us, paralyze us, and smother us with hopelessness. That was David’s cave. He was running for his life. So he called out to God for protection. “Have mercy!” And God gave it. Even though David’s future looked bleak from the bottom of that cave, God reached in with a Hand of Hope. He took David from sitting on a rock to sitting on a throne. God can lead you through all of your fears, too. God is your protector and provider. Your future is in His Hands.
God knew EXACTLY where David was. He knows exactly where you are as well. Cry out to Him as David did. Confess your sin to God, and let His Mercy bring you out of hiding. Let God calm your heart by spreading His Wings of Love around you. Let Him bring the Light of His Presence to your darkness and renew your hope. Let Him fill your heart with His Peace and revive you with His Strength. God is calling you to come out of your cave and hide yourself in Him. Cry out to Him, “Have mercy!” And He will. He’ll hold you close until the danger is passed. David’s destiny wasn’t in that cave. Neither is yours. That’s God’s Word for you today.
